Product Review: 12-piece Forstner Bit Set

We proudly introduced a new 12-piece forstner bit set early last month. Thank you to all who provided feedback on our previous set of forstner bits! We took that information and made sure we were providing customers with a quality product with this new forstner bit set.

Read the product review below to learn more about the efficient design, and tips and tricks for use.

Hex Head Shank and Saw-tooth Design

Instead of the conventional round shank, these forstner bit shanks are hexagon shaped. This design makes it easier to tighten the chuck in order to prevent slippage as the bit bores into wood.

hex-head-shank-1

The forstner bits in this set also feature durable saw-tooth cutting edges. This type of design allows users to easily dispel the wood chips and apply less downward pressure on the bits, which also results in less overheating and dulling of the cutting edge.

saw-tooth-endEach forstner bit is made from durable T10 steel, ensuring a longer life and cleaner drill use after use. Includes a wooden storage case with the size of the forstner bits listed on the slots in the case. The RPM is conveniently marked on the shank on each individual bit.

Tips and Tricks for Use

As with all forstner bits, the goal is to create consistent depth and flat bottom holes. In order to do so, we recommend the following:

  • Use these forstner bits in a drill press rather than a handheld drill
  • Run the forstner bits at the recommended speeds as listed on each bit
  • Feather (increase/decrease) the cutting pressure to easily dispel the wood chips and to prevent overheating
  • Clamp the wood down to the drill press table or place the wood part between clamps blocks to prevent the wood part from spinning in your hand
  • Protect your hands with safe grip woodworking gloves and wear eye protection
  • Ensure the drill press drive belt tension is suitable to prevent the pulley from spinning on the belt as you bore the holes into wood

Our models were built of Alder wood, but you will be able to select the wood species you prefer to work with. The cigar humidor woodworking plan details the lining of the case and lid with ¼-inch thickness Spanish Cedar wood. You’ll love that the cigar humidor box is sized to hold 75 cigars! The hygrometer component on the outside of the box will indicate the optimum humidity to help keep your cigars fresh.

Product Review: Young Town Push-On Quartz Clock Movement

This Young Town push-on clock movement is one of the newest movements to Klockit’s line of quartz clock movements. It’s a precise motor that’s easy to assemble with hands and has a neat design. Read the review below to find out how this quartz clock movement works, what its most notable features are, and who should buy it.

Young Town Push On Movement

Push On – Is It That Easy?

The answer is YES! It really is that easy. Simply push on the hour and minute clock hands, and then press on the cap pin or second hand. You’ll like that there’s no tiny thru nut to thread on the movement’s shaft to hold the minute hand on.

Notable Features:

This push-on clock movement is easy to install – but that’s not the only thing you’ll enjoy! Young Town has been making clock movements on precision machinery imported from Switzerland and Germany for nearly 39 years. You’ll have peace of mind knowing you purchased a quality clock movement.

We also enjoyed the design of this movement because it allows you to see the moving gears through the movement’s back.

Back - Young Town Clock Movement

Who Should Buy It?

After thoroughly testing and working with this clock movement, I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quality quartz clock movement that’s easy to integrate with their clock project. Sneak Peek: Outdoor Folding Table

We are excited to introduce this exclusive sneak peek of our upcoming Outdoor Folding Table woodworking plan. This neat table is designed to be a multi purpose table with a variety of usages ranging from grilling, food serving, bar, potting station, and more!

Check out the photos below of this new outdoor table, ranging in stages from completed assembled to ready to put away.

photo-strip

There are just ten quick mount knob bolts and four leg brace wood pins involved in assembly and disassembly. The finished prototype below is made of Cedar and is finished with a Rustic Brown exterior Krylon stain.

Outdoor Finished Table

Dimensions

The fully assembled table (to include optional back upper shelf unit) dimensions are 60” in length, 18” in width and 50” height (30” table top height). When fully disassembled and folded up for storage, the complete table unit (minus optional top shelf and optional bottom shelf) measures 30” x 18” x 10”.

With the folded up top shelf unit and folded up bottom shelf unit stacked on top of the folded up table, the total height will be less than 20”. This means any storage space of 30” x 18” x 20” height can accommodate the complete table unit.

Fun Fact: This table takes five minutes to completely setup or disassemble!

Recommended Tools and Supplies

We recommend using the following tools and woodworking supplies to make the table: table saw, band saw, air nailer, woodworking clamps, drill press, socket wrench, screwdriver, wood glue, and sandpaper. All necessary assembly hardware will be available for purchase in an accompanying component package. More details will be included when we release this new woodworking plan later this year. Stay tuned!

Your Turn!

Tell Us: Would you be inclined to preserve the natural wood look with a clear seal coat, or finish this table with paint and/or stain? Tell us your preferences in the comments section below!

Sneak Peek: Rustic Wall Clock Kit

We are excited to be working on a new clock kit product that will be introduced later this year. This rustic-inspired wall clock features a stacked top and base that compliments the basic style of the frame.

sneak-peek

Once assembled, this clock will be a nice, medium-sized timepiece that’s sure to look great on any wall in your home. Our model above is finished with chalk paint and dark wax distressing to achieve an antique look that compliments the style of the clock.

Kit specifics

The finished dimensions of this clock will measure 16-7/8” Height x 11-1/2” Width x 4-1/2” Depth. The glass opening (dial viewing) in the front of the clock measures 9-3/8″ square.

Still in the works…

As we finish up the final details of this new clock kit, one of the pieces to be decided is the clock movement that will be offered with this clock making kit. It will be a non-pendulum quartz clock movement that will accommodate a 1/4” thick dial board thickness. We have a couple of options to choose from and look forward to finalizing that part.

Also, we will be designing a new clock dial (face) for this clock kit. The dial is in the beginning stages of being designed, but we will post an update to this page once it’s complete. Last but not least, the specific type of lumber the kit will be offered in is not set in stone. We are leaning toward a wood like Poplar because it is suitable for staining and painting.

Stay tuned!

We look forward to introducing this new wall clock kit in the near future! Be sure to check out our other clock kits here:

Product Review: Quartex® High Torque, Set & Forget, 3 Battery Pack Quartz Clock Movement

The Quartex® High Torque, Set & Forget, 3 Battery Pack Movement is the latest edition to Klockit’s line of quartz clock movements. It’s a 3-in-1 clock movement that’s powerful, smart, and long lasting. Read the review below to find out how this clock movement works, what its most notable features are, and who should buy it.

14161

Equipped With Power

14161-3This new clock movement is equipped with High Torque power, which means it is capable of running the longest clock hands on the market today. We recommend using our extra long clock hands with this movement – choose from 8” to 17 ½” hands in various styles to complement your clock’s style.

Set & Forget – Is it really that easy?

The answer is YES! It really is that easy. Simply select your time zone on the back of this clock movement, and the correct time and date are automatically displayed. You will never have to adjust the time settings on your clock when your movement is powered by our patented Set & Forget technology.

Inside this quartz clock movement, you’ll find a microchip “calendar” that is preprogrammed with the date and time until 2030. The microchip calendar enables the clock movement to automatically spring forward and fall back at Daylight Saving Time without a radio controlled signal.

In the fall, you’ll notice the clock movement will move the hands forward 11 hours at an accelerated speed to achieve a set back of one hour. In the spring, the movement will move the hands forward one hour at an accelerated speed to achieve the advance of one hour.

If you like the fact that you won’t have to update the time of your clock until 2030 with this motor, you’ll also enjoy this movement’s next notable feature.

Long Lasting Power

14161-2This new clock movement features long lasting power, thanks to its extended life battery pack. Simply insert three AA batteries to give this movement power to run up to five years. Trust us, you’ll enjoy the convenience of not having to take down your wall clock for five years!

Who Should Buy It?

After testing and working with this clock movement, I would highly recommend it to anyone who is creating a large wall clock or looking for a low maintenance clock movement. At just $13.25, the price is right for this movement. It’s easy to assemble and use in clock projects, and offers long-lasting power and smart technology.

Woodworking Projects For Beginners

Like any hobby I have discovered in the past, each has its initial investments. In fact, I don’t believe there is a single hobby in existence that doesn’t require some sort of materials or basic skill set to get you started.

Want to run? Even though it’s a free world to jog in, you probably will want some good running shoes and apparel if you don’t have them. Want to fly RC planes? Look to spend over $700 by the time you have completed your first plane, and be careful not to crash as you learn the ropes of flying RC.

Woodworking is no exception in the slightest. But what if there was a way to experiment with aspects of woodworking, yet not have to make any large initial investments or require any of the skill sets woodworkers pick up along the way? A way to test the water before you dive into the pool?

Enter the newest additions to the Klockit line: The Manhattan, The Scalloped Ridge, The Beresford, and the La Salle. Keep in mind all of these clocks can be considered excellent craft projects in their own right, an example being our Halloween Frankenstein Clock (which is a super cool and crafty “re-make” of the Manhattan clock), but we shouldn’t overlook the most important fact that all of these kits make excellent beginning woodworking projects as well.

clock-kits-beginner

No Assembly Required

scalloped-ridgeNo assembly is required with the Manhattan, Scalloped Ridge, and Beresford, which means no tools and clamping purchases are required. With some pre-finish sanding, each of these clocks can be ready for staining/finishing, or painting.

Best of all, you can select between purchasing the kit versions (which include sandpaper and clock insert), or you can select the case versions and purchase a clock insert of your choice separately (sandpaper purchased separately with the “case” versions).

See all here: Klockit.com/depts/ClockKits/dept-422.html

Ready For Level 2?

34225Want to progress a level and try an assembly which must be glued together? Ready to purchase your first couple of clamping devices to start off your collection of woodworking materials? Consider the La Salle, a retro style weather station reminiscently inspired by the styles of radios and car dashboards from the 40’s and 50’s.

It offers a novice introduction to glued assemblies, teaches/reinforces pre-finishing techniques learned with the previously mentioned clocks, and still lends itself to crafty expression and personalization.

How the Water Feels

Each of the aforementioned projects make an excellent starting point for the journey into the realm of woodworking and clock-making as a hobby/craft, as well as a means to gain skills and knowledge that can be applied to other assemblies of interest. Best of all, each requires minimal investment and allows beginners an opportunity to dip their feet to see how the water feels…
