Sneak Peek: Backlit Skeleton Movement Bracket Clock Woodworking Plan

You may be wondering, “What’s the inspiration behind new Klockit woodworking plans?” The answer: our plan product ideas come from many sources, but perhaps the most frequent plan inspiration comes about as a result of a new component – clock motor, clock insert, weather-related instrument, etc. – being introduced as a potential new product.

While these new components are often very innovative and interesting, it is not always obvious how our Klockit customers could use the components.

This was recently the case when a skeleton movement insert was introduced to our new product group. Everyone agreed this item would be of great interest to Klockit customers, but there was some concern about how to best accentuate the skeleton configuration of the movement insert with its moving gears.

Then The Light Bulb Went Off

What if the skeleton movement insert could be backlit within the case using an LED tea light or candelabra light? We knew that if we could develop a woodworking plan for a small backlit clock case, our customers could not only enjoy building our the design, but they would then incorporate our backlit feature into many other clock case designs of their own creation.

Design Time

After evaluation of a preliminary clock design model, I set about drawing detailed construction drawings from which to make the formal model to be used online and in the Klockit catalog.

Next I actually constructed each part (shown in the photo) to the drawing specifications to ensure complete accuracy of the drawings that would be made into scaleable CAD plans. Last I assembled and finished the wood parts into a formal photography model using a cranberry-colored finish.

Sneak Peek: Westmont Bracket Clock

We are pleased to announce the Westmont Bracket Clock, which has been given the official “go ahead” to proceed as a Klockit clock kit product. But before heading to the Klockit website to look up this beautiful gem, understand it’s still in the product development stage. However, we can certainly tantalize you with an exclusive preview!

This clock assembly features laminate-assembly base plates. When assembled, the combined plates create a gradually diminishing classical roman profile of coves with bead. westmont

The trim and end cap pieces promote a modest, yet stylish, ogee profile which gives way to single vein columns that frame the clock face opening in symmetric sophistication. A removable case back panel allows for quick and easy access to the clock movement within.

The result? Finished design perfection.

We have selected an elegant European-style clock face, with glass and hinged bezel to compliment the warm, natural hue of the solid cherry wood case assembly. While the initial premise of many new Klockit designs is to allow customers their choice of movement, the Westmont will prove to be no exception.

We plan to offer two different versions: A battery-operated quartz version (see #12001 for movement features) and a Westminster chime mechanical movement version (see #13006 for movement features). Both movements offer rich chimes and quality timekeeping that will continue to please throughout the many years you will enjoy this heirloom clock assembly.

There is plenty more to comment and compliment about this new kit assembly, which should be making its way to customers about mid 2013!
