Product Review: 12-piece Forstner Bit Set

We proudly introduced a new 12-piece forstner bit set early last month. Thank you to all who provided feedback on our previous set of forstner bits! We took that information and made sure we were providing customers with a quality product with this new forstner bit set.

Read the product review below to learn more about the efficient design, and tips and tricks for use.

Hex Head Shank and Saw-tooth Design

Instead of the conventional round shank, these forstner bit shanks are hexagon shaped. This design makes it easier to tighten the chuck in order to prevent slippage as the bit bores into wood.

hex-head-shank-1

The forstner bits in this set also feature durable saw-tooth cutting edges. This type of design allows users to easily dispel the wood chips and apply less downward pressure on the bits, which also results in less overheating and dulling of the cutting edge.

saw-tooth-endEach forstner bit is made from durable T10 steel, ensuring a longer life and cleaner drill use after use. Includes a wooden storage case with the size of the forstner bits listed on the slots in the case. The RPM is conveniently marked on the shank on each individual bit.

Tips and Tricks for Use

As with all forstner bits, the goal is to create consistent depth and flat bottom holes. In order to do so, we recommend the following:

  • Use these forstner bits in a drill press rather than a handheld drill
  • Run the forstner bits at the recommended speeds as listed on each bit
  • Feather (increase/decrease) the cutting pressure to easily dispel the wood chips and to prevent overheating
  • Clamp the wood down to the drill press table or place the wood part between clamps blocks to prevent the wood part from spinning in your hand
  • Protect your hands with safe grip woodworking gloves and wear eye protection
  • Ensure the drill press drive belt tension is suitable to prevent the pulley from spinning on the belt as you bore the holes into wood

Dimensions

The fully assembled table (to include optional back upper shelf unit) dimensions are 60” in length, 18” in width and 50” height (30” table top height). When fully disassembled and folded up for storage, the complete table unit (minus optional top shelf and optional bottom shelf) measures 30” x 18” x 10”.

With the folded up top shelf unit and folded up bottom shelf unit stacked on top of the folded up table, the total height will be less than 20”. This means any storage space of 30” x 18” x 20” height can accommodate the complete table unit.

Fun Fact: This table takes five minutes to completely setup or disassemble!

Recommended Tools and Supplies

We recommend using the following tools and woodworking supplies to make the table: table saw, band saw, air nailer, woodworking clamps, drill press, socket wrench, screwdriver, wood glue, and sandpaper. All necessary assembly hardware will be available for purchase in an accompanying component package. More details will be included when we release this new woodworking plan later this year. Stay tuned!

Product Review: Rectangle Cuckoo Clock

Rectangle Cuckoo ClockKlockit’s new rectangle cuckoo clock puts a modern twist on traditional cuckoo clocks. Interested in learning more? Read our review below to find out how this unique cuckoo clock works, what its most notable features are, and who should buy it. Feel free to leave your own review of this product in the comments section below.

How Does It Work?

Every hour on the hour, the doors on this cuckoo clock open and a small bird emerges to sing its song. Choose from 12 delightful bird sounds, or select the special cuckoo call. At dusk, the built-in light sensor automatically silences the bird sounds for a peaceful night’s sleep.

This cuckoo clock also features a large clock case made from lightweight metal, and doubles as a message board. Use the two included bird magnets to stick messages to the clock’s front. The attractive pendulum and bob are powered by a precise clock movement and gently swing below the clock case.

Notable Features

At first glance, you’ll notice that this cuckoo clock puts a modern twist on traditional cuckoo clocks. But that’s not the only notable feature this unique cuckoo clock has to offer. The attractive design on the clock’s front doubles as a message board, complete with two bird-shaped magnets.

In the back, you’ll find the clock’s back panel is magnetic and can be removed in seconds for easy access to the clock movement. This cuckoo clock is larger than the traditional cuckoo clock, but is made from lightweight metal material and is easy to hang on the wall.

Who Should Buy It?

Our new rectangle cuckoo clock is the perfect modern timepiece for any home or office setting. It’s easy to set up out of the box and hang on the wall. Of course it’ll look great on your wall, but this unique cuckoo clock also makes a great birthday or holiday gift!

Coming Soon: The Delaware Grandmother Clock Plan

With the final woodworking plan material drafts completed, I thought this would be an opportune time to formally introduce the woodworking community to one of Klockit’s most ambitious plan projects to date. Picking up where the “Project Delaware” blog post left off last month, I am very proud to introduce / re-introduce the Delaware Grandmother Clock!

History of the Delaware Clock:

Long-time Klockit customers are no strangers to the Delaware clock assembly. Klockit carried the Delaware as a kit (only) in the 1990’s and 2000’s. To date, it was one of the more successful kit products we offered, and demand for a woodworking plan version was constant. As wood prices increased, the Delaware became too expensive and labor-intensive to produce in kit form, and was discontinued. The possibility of a plan version was moved to the “back burner” of the product development list and remained in this state for a number of years.

Return of the Delaware:

Over the past four years, we continued to receive requests for a pinched waist floor clock. While a kit version can take the better part of a year or longer to develop, woodworking plans can be introduced just as soon as the final design is ironed out and specifications are applied. Thus, the original Delaware engineering drawings were pulled out, dusted off, and reviewed.

We also dug deep within the Klockit comment card archives to review design changes and suggestions offered from customers who had purchased the kit version in the past. From there, the clock cabinet design was updated and the plan specification drawings were created. Long-time Klockit customers can rest assured… the new Delaware design will still include all the main features that made its predecessor so successful!

Main Re-design Features:

Perhaps the greatest feature of the original Delaware clock was the fact that, typical of many pinched waist designs from the past, the hood cabinet is completely removable from the case. This allows uncompromised access to the mechanical movement within and ease of any required movement adjustments during the set-up and regulation process.delaware-sample

To improve upon the assembly, changes were made to the back and floor panels to make them ½” thick for increased strength. The upper hood assembly was re-designed so that the clock face will seat directly in front of the dial board panel and so that the case can accommodate one of two different mechanical movement options. Finally, revisions were made to the base cabinet assembly to increase the height, making the clock more proportionate between base, waist, and hood cabinet assemblies.

What Can You Expect From the New Delaware Plan?

I am really excited because this is one of the more ambitious woodworking plan development projects Klockit has tackled since completion of the Mora Grandfather Clock Plan a few years prior. The Delaware clock plan will include a 70-page construction plan booklet which will cover all specifications for every wood part, detailing each part in (at least) two orthographic views.

The plan will also elaborate on machining suggestion steps for the more complex parts, and will include router bit recommendations to provide woodworkers with as much material as possible to achieve profiles as illustrated. As a final note, the plan will even include upper and lower glass panel specifications for ease of sourcing with local glass retailers.

As with all our plans, the Delaware will include a step-by-step written assembly instruction booklet which will be used in conjunction with a separate step-by-step illustrated assembly booklet. These fundamental documents will guide woodworkers through assembly of the entire case from beginning to end (to include movement and chime mounting).

The final booklet included with the plan will encompass full scale trace templates and machining templates for those wood pieces that are more complicated to make. Full-scale templates and/or machining templates will be provided for the arch cut-outs of the waist and hood door frame openings, the arch cut-out of the upper and lower door arched rails, the dial board cut-out, the crown front plate, front ogee swan-neck crown molding pieces, the decorative base molding cut-out, upper and lower door glass panel arches, and the finial.

A supporting component package, containing all the necessary hardware required to complete assembly, will be offered in conjunction with the plan package. This will include hinges, surface mount lock, key, key-plate (or escutcheon), turn-buttons, knobs, door catches, leg levelers, and all necessary fasteners for assembly.

Sneak Peek: Cigar Humidor Case and Tabletop Liquor Cabinet

Back in April, I shared the design ideas for a cigar humidor and tabletop liquor cabinet. I have since completed the prototype models and would like to share this preview with our readers before the wood finishing is complete.

Ready-for-Finishing-003

These two items will be new woodworking plan and component introductions that are scheduled for rollout in January 2015. The humidifier component is sized for 75 cigar storage. The hygrometer component will indicate the optimum humidity to keep cigars fresh.

While these models were built of Alder wood, you will be able to select whatever wood species you prefer to work with. The cigar humidor model plan will cover lining the case and lid with 1/4″ thickness Spanish Cedar, and even show the removable tray made of Spanish Cedar.

The revolving turntable on the liquor cabinet should accommodate 5-6 bottles of one’s favorite liquor bottles, and smoothly revolves 360 degrees on the 6″ Lazy Susan.

cigar-humidor-liquor-cabinet

I truly enjoyed designing these new woodworking plan products and I am confident our Klockit customers are going to enjoy building them as well. Both the cigar humidor case and tabletop liquor cabinet make for very special gifts to family or friends.
