Klockit Customer Creates Handcrafted Heirlooms For Loved Ones

Like many of you, Klockit customer Rich Didier is a talented woodworker that used his skill to create handcrafted heirlooms for his loved ones for Christmas this year. I was privileged to see the four clocks Rich made as gifts, and wanted to share them with our readers.

How It All Began

I have enjoyed working with Rich on numerous woodworking projects, dating back to when Klockit first wanted to incorporate information for creating “Hard-To-Make” parts like crown moldings and split columns for our Churchill Grandfather Clock plans. Rich was instrumental in confirming that our ‘Step-By-Step” plan information was accurate by actually making the parts in his shop from our drawings.

Rich has completed more than 25 projects over the years, the most notable include building a Cooper Collection grandfather clock, and designing and building the Mora grandfather clock – which he later helped Klockit develop into a woodworking plan product. Rich also built various photography models for Klockit’s exclusive furniture plans that were used in the Klockit catalog and website.

From Kit to Plan

I only mention the background above to explain why I was not all that surprised when Rich informed me he wanted to build Klockit’s 40th Anniversary mantel clocks to give as Christmas gifts to family and friends. In fact, he wanted to make the clocks from raw lumber instead of from ready-to-assemble kits.

While Klockit had been discussing the possibility of offering a woodworking plan for the 40th Anniversary mantel clock, it had not yet been determined if it was feasible to develop a plan that could provide safe and practical methods for making some of the complex parts required to complete the clock.

When I explained my reservations about this clock kit becoming a woodworking plan, Rich volunteered to work with Klockit to confirm that complicated parts like the base plates and crown plates could be made by recreational woodworkers using typical woodworking equipment and tooling.

Over the course of a few months, I enjoyed working with Rich in perfecting the drawings and instructional information that would ultimately be included in Klockit’s 40th Anniversary mantel clock woodworking plan.

Plan Perfected

Once the plan was perfected, Rich built four 40th Anniversary mantel clocks for his friends and family for Christmas this year. Watch the video below to see the warm reaction from the recipients as they receive their gifts.

Why We Do What We Do

The people in the video now have handcrafted heirlooms that will be treasured for years to come. The overall emotion from everyone is priceless and serves as an example of what many of our customers probably experience when they pass along their labors of love.

The entire Klockit team is fortunate and privileged to be a part of the process.

More On Rich

Rich’s career spans 34 years and began as a shop mechanic for forklift trucks.  From there, he ascended to road mechanic, then to technical support, and (finally) after-market sales to dealers and customers.  Prior to woodworking, Rich’s other hobbies included building and flying RC planes and scale model railroading.

Rich started woodworking with home remodeling projects approximately 30 years ago. He decided to remodel his own home; all of the wood trim, base molding, (etc) of his home was machined, stained, finished, and installed by Rich himself. After he retired, and had completed his home remodeling, woodworking quickly became a hobby.

Rich created an “Apple book” several years ago, which is a hardcover book that features all his woodworking projects.  He is currently working to complete a second edition, which features additional projects he has completed since he created his first book.
